Tutorial Seven - Assistive Technology

“Any item, piece of equipment or product system whether acquired commercially off the shelf, modified or customized that is used to increase or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities” (Public Law,1976 , as cited in Cook & Hussey, 1995).

Describe a piece of equipment introducted in your tutorial.

Wobble Switch -

What is Assistive Technology

Function: this is a switch which acts as a control mechanism (like an on/off switch) to activate a appliance/object (e.g. communication aid, laptop, a remote controled toy etc).
The wobble switch can be used by a range of people with disabilities, but it especially intended for those with poor motor control. It is a 4 inch wand which can be easy activated by hitting it in any direction (using a swiping motion). Wobble Switchs cost approximaely $300(NZ)however funding may be available for individual's with a disability through Ministry of Health (Enable/Accessable) or ACC (depending on the individual). The wobble switch is adaptable, and can be attached to a goose neck (long bendy wire) which can attach to a desk/wheelchair so it can be within easy reach.

How does the Wobble Switch increase functional capacity for the user?
The Wobble Switch is an excellent way of allowing persons with disabilities the
ability to control the environment around them independantly. Through activating the switch, another piece of assistive equipment can be activated giving this person a way of interacting with others in a participation focus, developing independance or increasing alertness over time.

For example, an individual with cerebral palsy who suffers from inabiility to communicate and decreased Range of Movement (ROM) due to contractures in both arms, would be able to activate the wobble switch through bumping it with his head, and this could be attached to a communication device, which would allow him to communicate with his peers, aid worker, family etc.

The OT would teach the Individual specific competiencies with using the device, from both a functional and operational use to strategic and social use. This means teaching them about how to use the tool, when to use it and developing ways to use it in social contexts.

Tutorial Six: Online Communities

Facebook
www.facebook.com

What is the focus of this community

Facebook is an social online network that has been designed to link friends and family worldwide. It is operated and privately owned by Facebook, Inc.

What services are provided? How interactive is this site? How can people contribute?

Facebook allows you to design your own profile page, with personal information, and upload your own photos. Facebook is very interactive. You can also be tagged in photos on others pages, join fan clubs and groups, add videos and engage in games and quizes.

You can talk to your friends live through facebook chat. This allows quick messaging and communication with your facebook friends. You can control who you are friends by adding, deleting and blocking.

Consider material presented during the lecture and make comment on why people choose to contribute to this community. What is it they are seeking?

Facebookers choose to be involved in this online community for social interaction and to gain a sense of identity and belonging. They feel they can communicate who they truely are as an individual and express their opinions and everyday thoughts freely. They form a sense of belonging through joining groups and fanpages, and make friends with people who have similar beliefs, religious or cultural characteristics as them.

Cut and paste an example of the type of topics being discussed (you may have to provide a context to your excerpt).

One Page has been designed at working to change and empower how
the media looks at people with Intellectual Disabilities.

http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?v=app_2344061033&ref=profile&id=573043597#!/group.php?gid=63516216741

Considering material presented during the course and make comment on the potential ethical issues that may arise in this community e.g. lack of identity and accountability.

There has been much critism of facebook in relation to the privacy of their users, child safety, the use of advertising scripts, data mining, and the inability to terminate accounts without first manually deleting all the content. As users put their personal information and photos on facebook this could put them in danger of identity thief. Facebookers may fake who they really are, and in doing so, showcase false identity to others. There are also ethical issues with groups which are promoting anorexia, denying the holocaust and disrespecting people with disabilities etc. People who make these pages do not have any accountability and are free to make these without punishment. The company however, does have the power to take these pages off the website and others can report pages which hold offensive or pornographic material etc.

Consider material presented during the lecture and make comment on the benefits this community holds over traditional notions of community e.g. communities reliant on geographic proximity

Facebook can compliment peoples lives by allowing them to keep in touch with family and friends that they would otherwise not be able to contact e.g. overseas or in geographically isolated places. As the connections are instant the information they would provide would be up to date, and the service is free. Information shared over facebook could foster understanding and unity between people, and therefore build up their relationships.

Consider material presented during the lecture and make comment what this community lacks or can not provide which traditional communities can.

As facebook is an online community it does not have the same personal relevance and reality as traditional communities. People can have a delusional reliance of facebook for all their social interaction, and this is not healthy. Traditional communities involve real life, personal contact with people giving them a chance to interact on a deeper level, and communicate more fully through use of facial expression and tone of voice etc, whereas facebook can only communicate a message of what a person says.Communication through online communicties such as facebook can often be misinterperated or understood, leading to relationship problems.

Wii Gaming Consoles (15/3)

Watch this:

1. Why do you think Wii gaming has appeal to people who are not traditionally video game players?

It gives the older generaton in the clip an alternative to using the normal exercises during rehabilitation (post surgery). It is something more exciting and gives them the opportunity to engage in the 'sport' they want to, whether it is bowling or golf or tennis, the list goes on!! And lastly, it is FUN! The old mans face was estatic!

2. What is the relevance to OT?

This is an great Intervention tool to use with clients to improve their physical capabilities while also engaging them in meaningful occupatons that they enjoy. Clients may be more motivated to engage in Wii games than traditional therapy excercises, and this woud speed up and enhance their recovery.

3. Inverstigate the other applications offered by the wii gaming console, how else could it be used as an OT tool?

Not only do Wii consoles have games which help wth enhancing fitness, endurance and co-ordination, they also have applications designed to enhance peoples cognitive functioning such as problem solving, planning, spatial awareness, memory and numerical skills. This could be used also in therapy to enhance cognitive capabilities.

Tutorial Four & Five: Video Production

You tube is a video hosting and sharing website that provides many services including:

- Finding video's - you can subscribe to many channels and save videos to view later.
- You can post your own videos online, others can watch these and comment on them.
- Watching videos for educational and entertainment purposes
- Youtube can also provide you with tips and tricks for making your own videos
- When you make your own profile, you can connect with people around the world, who
share similar interests.

You tube was created in December 2005 and almost became an instant hit! Youtube was purchased by google in 2006 for approx. 1.6 billion dollars.

When filming it is useful to plan your film by the use of a storyboard. A storyboard is a series of drawings that depict the sequence and action of the proposed film. In my group, I found it useful to collect my thoughts and create a precise plan of what each shot would cover and the angles they would be shot at. This made the filming flow better and it was easier to edit the film using the storyboard to position the clips in the right sequence. For confidentiality reasons, we did not film individuals faces and did not have any verbal input, so scripting including facial expressions was not needed. However, we did look at the movement of actors and the mood we could portray through this movement. We discussed the aim of our film, developed our lead actress role and mapped out the begginning, middle and ending of our plot. Camera angles and shots were important to portray our message clearly (e.g. close up of computer message)and props (e.g. asignment papers) were used.
