“A new technology is rarely superior to an old one in every feature” Briefly discuss this statement in relation to digital camera technology.
What would you consider to be some of the Pluses and minuses digital camera technology holds in relation to more traditional film based cameras?
I believe in some sense, new technology can never really replace older technology because they are both so different.
-Old cameras run on film so it is always a surprise when you receive your developed film photos. The end product is a material object, so you don’t risk the chance of accidently deleting the photos off your computer or camera! Also, often people take more time framing the shot when using a film camera.
-Digital Cameras are good as you can select the pictures you want, which saves you money and more space on your camera to take better pictures. If you take a bad photo, then it’s not the end of the world! Digital images are easy and immediate. You have the option not to develop them and you can store them on a USB, Camera memory card or Computer for easy access. It is also easier to edit and upload these images online or send through email.
List some of the ways that digital images can be stored transferred and manipulated using other communications technology:-
– Flikr: online storage
- Online Communities – Face book, bebo
- Photoshop –editing
- Windows photo Gallery- on computers
- Online photo editors
Given the prevalence of image capturing devices, and thinking about the issues discussed in Tut one, consider what sort of ethical issues may arise with their use.
- Privacy and Confidentiality
- Identity theft
- Personal digital images being posted online without individuals consent.
Briefly discuss some of the ways that digital images could, or are, being used in Occupational Therapy practice (reference and link to any websites, or blogs)
- Training of OT Students or clients e.g. How to use a Splint, Care Pathways
- Home assessments or reports – providing visual proof of equipment or adaption needed in a client’s home.
- Image of Client’s ROM/Physical disability to assess whether the use of equipment has been successful to over extended periods. E.g. sleep positioning, spinal deformity.

Explain what the difference is between digital and optical zoom
Digital zoom crops the image to a smaller size and then enlarges the cropped picture to fill the screen again, whereas optical zoom is when the camera lens changes focal Length and magnification to capture the picture.
What is meant by the term, Megapixel
“A megapixel is equal to one million pixels (picture elements). Digital images are made up of thousands of these tiny, tile-like picture elements” (Digicamhelp, 2010).
